Overview

How the SAP ABAP syllabus is organised

ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) is the language in which SAP itself is written, and the language used to extend it. Developers write ABAP to create reports, data conversions, interfaces to other systems, printable forms and custom logic inside business processes.

Each topic below combines the concept with practice on an SAP system. The order and depth can be adjusted for a batch, so ask for the current plan when you enquire. You can also download the brochure (PDF).

Topics covered in SAP ABAP

ABAP Dictionary. Defines tables, data elements and structures (transaction SE11).
Reports. Programs that read data and display it, often as ALV grids (SE38 or SE80).
Modularisation. Function modules (SE37), classes and methods (SE24) that organise reusable logic.
Enhancements. Ways to add custom logic to standard SAP, such as user exits, BAdIs and enhancement spots.
Interfaces. IDocs, BAPIs, RFCs and web services that connect SAP to other systems.
Forms. Smart Forms and Adobe Forms for invoices, order confirmations and other documents.
CDS views. Data models defined on the database layer, used for reporting and apps in S/4HANA.
RAP (RESTful Application Programming model). The current model for building OData services and Fiori apps on S/4HANA.

Hands-on

How a custom report is built in ABAP

Practice should include walking through real business flows, for example:

A business user asks for a report that SAP does not provide as standard.
The developer reads the specification and identifies the tables or CDS views that hold the data.
The program is written, with a selection screen and an output such as an ALV grid.
It is tested, transported through the landscape and released to users.
Later, the same data can be exposed as a CDS view and a Fiori app.

S/4HANA

What is different in S/4HANA

ABAP runs on the SAP HANA database, so code pushdown with CDS and AMDP is encouraged.
The clean-core approach moves custom code towards ABAP Cloud and side-by-side extensions on SAP BTP.
RAP is the recommended model for new transactional apps.
Eclipse-based ABAP Development Tools (ADT) are now the main development environment for modern ABAP.
