Overview

How the SAP Basis syllabus is organised

SAP BASIS is to SAP what system administration is to an IT environment. BASIS administrators install the systems, manage users and authorisations, move changes between development, test and production, monitor performance and handle backups and upgrades.

Each topic below combines the concept with practice on an SAP system. The order and depth can be adjusted for a batch, so ask for the current plan when you enquire. You can also download the brochure (PDF).

System landscape. The set of development, quality and production systems that a company runs.
Client and user administration. Creating users, roles and profiles (transaction SU01) and managing clients.
Transport management. Moves changes safely between systems using the transport system (STMS).
Monitoring and performance. Watching processes, jobs and logs (for example SM50, SM37 and ST22 for dumps).
Background jobs. Scheduled programs that run in the background, such as interfaces and period-end tasks.
Database administration. Managing SAP HANA, including backups, memory and disk usage.
Security and authorisations. Protecting the system through roles, audit logs and secure communication.
Upgrades and migrations. Moving to new releases or to S/4HANA using tools such as SUM and DMO.

How a change reaches production in SAP

Practice should include walking through real business flows, for example:

A developer or consultant makes a change in the development system and records it in a transport request.
The request is released and imported into the quality system by the BASIS team.
After testing, the same request is approved and imported into production.
BASIS monitors the import and the system health afterwards.
If something fails, logs and dumps guide the diagnosis.

S/4HANA

What is different in S/4HANA

The HANA database is the foundation, so HANA administration is part of the job.
Fiori needs front-end servers or an embedded set-up and gateway configuration.
System conversion tools help move ECC systems to S/4HANA.
Hybrid landscapes connect on-premise SAP to SAP BTP and other cloud services.
