How to use this

Preparing for a SAP CO interview

Interviewers for fresher and early-career roles test fundamentals and whether you have used the system. Understand each answer instead of memorising it, and be ready to describe how you would do the task in SAP. If you have not practised yet, say so honestly and explain what you have learned.

Questions

10 SAP CO questions with answers

  1. What is a controlling area and how does it relate to a company code?
A controlling area is the organisational unit for which cost accounting is carried out. One controlling area can include one or more company codes, which must share the same chart of accounts.
  2. What is the difference between a cost centre, a profit centre and an internal order?
A cost centre collects costs for a department or location. A profit centre measures the performance of a business area by combining revenue and costs. An internal order collects costs for a specific job, event or project.
  3. What are primary and secondary cost elements?
Primary cost elements correspond to expense accounts in the general ledger. Secondary cost elements are used only inside Controlling for internal allocations and settlements. In S/4HANA, cost elements are maintained as general ledger accounts.
  4. What is the difference between assessment and distribution?
Assessment uses secondary cost elements, so the original cost types are not visible on the receiver. Distribution uses the primary cost element, so the receiver sees the original cost type.
  5. What is settlement of an internal order?
Settlement passes the collected costs to receivers such as a cost centre, asset or profitability segment. It uses a settlement profile, an allocation structure and a settlement rule.
  6. What are the types of profitability analysis?
Costing-based and account-based. Account-based profitability analysis reconciles directly with the general ledger and is the default in S/4HANA margin analysis.
  7. What is the standard hierarchy in cost centre accounting?
A mandatory hierarchy in which every cost centre of a controlling area is assigned to a node, so that reporting and planning can be done by level.
  8. What are activity types and activity prices?
Activity types measure the output of a cost centre, such as machine hours or labour hours. The activity price is the rate used to charge that activity to receivers.
  9. How is a product cost estimate created?
A material cost estimate uses the bill of materials, routing and a costing variant to calculate cost. It is then marked and released to update the standard price (transactions CK11N and CK24).
  10. What is variance analysis in controlling?
It compares planned or target cost with actual cost for a production order or product, and splits the difference into categories such as input price, resource usage and lot size variances.
