If you are starting SAP FICO, you will hear about both ECC and S/4HANA. This guide explains the real differences in finance, in plain language, and tells a fresher what to learn first.
Learn S/4HANA Finance. SAP ECC is the older ERP, and SAP has set a deadline after which it will stop standard maintenance for it, so new projects and migrations are mostly on S/4HANA. You will still meet ECC systems in support work and interviews, so it helps to know the main differences.
Check SAP's official maintenance statements for current dates, because they have been updated before.
| Area | SAP ECC | SAP S/4HANA Finance |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting data | FI and CO store line items in separate tables and are reconciled. | One Universal Journal (table ACDOCA) holds FI and CO line items together. |
| Customers and vendors | Separate customer and vendor master records. | Business Partner with roles, used for both. |
| Asset accounting | Classic asset accounting with its own tables. | New asset accounting posting to the Universal Journal, with parallel valuation through ledgers. |
| Cost elements | Primary cost elements are a separate object in CO. | Cost elements are general ledger accounts. |
| General ledger | Classic or new general ledger, depending on the setup. | New general ledger is the standard, with ledgers and document splitting. |
| User interface | SAP GUI transactions. | Fiori apps alongside SAP GUI. |
| Reporting | Many reports read aggregate or index tables. | Reports read line items directly, so more can be analysed in real time. |
| Database | Runs on several databases. | Runs on the SAP HANA database. |
The concepts you learn first are the same in both systems: company codes, chart of accounts, fiscal year variants, posting periods, document types, accounts payable, accounts receivable and period-end closing. That is why learning S/4HANA first does not leave you unable to read ECC projects. You will mainly need to remember what was done differently before.
Interviewers often ask what the Universal Journal is, what Business Partner replaces and how asset accounting changed. Our SAP FICO interview questions for freshers include these.

The biggest difference is the Universal Journal. In S/4HANA, FI and CO line items are stored together in one table, so finance and controlling work from the same data. S/4HANA also uses Business Partner and new asset accounting.
Yes. Many companies still run ECC and are planning or carrying out migration to S/4HANA. Support and migration projects mean ECC knowledge is still useful, though new learners should start with S/4HANA.
No. You can learn S/4HANA Finance directly. The finance fundamentals are the same, and the differences from ECC can be picked up as short additions.
ACDOCA is the table that stores the Universal Journal in S/4HANA. It holds the line items of finance and controlling postings in one place.
Yes. The module name is still used, and the business areas remain the same. The difference is in how the data and master records are organised.
