What is SAP FICO?

SAP FICO is the finance backbone of an SAP system. Financial Accounting (FI) records every transaction that affects the company's accounts and produces the statutory reports: general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and asset accounting. Controlling (CO) tracks where money is spent inside the business, by cost centre, order, project and product, so managers can plan and control costs.

Almost every company that runs SAP uses FICO, which is why it is one of the most commonly implemented and most commonly taught modules. Whenever a purchase invoice is posted, a customer pays, or a salary cost is booked, FICO is where the accounting entry lands.

Key concepts

The main building blocks of FICO

In practice

How a purchase invoice flows through FICO

  1. A vendor invoice arrives and is posted against the vendor account in Accounts Payable (for example with transaction FB60 or MIRO when it comes from a purchase order).
  2. The system credits the vendor account and debits the expense or stock account in the general ledger.
  3. If the expense belongs to a department, the cost is also assigned to a cost centre in Controlling.
  4. On the due date, the payment run (transaction F110) pays the vendor and clears the open item.
  5. At month end, accruals and allocations are posted and the books are closed.

Careers

Roles you can work towards

Hiring needs vary by company and city, so we help you check current requirements during counselling.

Who can learn it

  • A basic understanding of accounting (debit, credit, ledgers) is helpful.
  • No programming is needed.
  • Commerce, accounting and finance backgrounds adapt fastest, but engineers and graduates from other fields do succeed.

How to start

  • Learn core accounting terms first: journal entries, trial balance, balance sheet and profit and loss.
  • Study the GL, AP and AR processes end to end before configuration.
  • Practise on a real S/4HANA system, posting documents and running period-end steps.
  • Then add Controlling and, if you like, a reporting skill such as SAP Analytics Cloud.
