Preparing for a SAP ABAP interview

Interviewers for fresher and early-career roles test fundamentals and whether you have used the system. Understand each answer instead of memorising it, and be ready to describe how you would do the task in SAP. If you have not practised yet, say so honestly and explain what you have learned.

10 SAP ABAP questions with answers

  1. What is the difference between a domain, a data element and a table?
    A domain defines technical attributes such as type and length. A data element adds semantic meaning, labels and documentation. A table holds the data and uses data elements for its fields.
  2. What are the types of internal tables?
    Standard (indexed, can have duplicates), sorted (sorted by key) and hashed (accessed by unique key). The type affects read performance.
  3. How do you improve the performance of a SELECT statement?
    Select only the fields you need rather than SELECT *, use WHERE conditions on indexed fields, avoid SELECT inside loops, and check that a FOR ALL ENTRIES table is not empty.
  4. What is ALV?
    The ABAP List Viewer, a standard tool for displaying tabular data with sorting, filtering and export. It is used through CL_SALV_TABLE or the function module approach.
  5. What is the difference between a BAPI, an RFC and an IDoc?
    A BAPI is a standard, stable business interface. An RFC is a function module that can be called remotely. An IDoc is a document format for asynchronous data exchange between systems.
  6. What are user exits, BAdIs and enhancement spots?
    They are ways to add custom logic to standard SAP without modifying it. BAdIs and enhancement spots are the modern, object-oriented approach.
  7. What are CDS views?
    Core Data Services views define data models in the database layer using SQL-like syntax with annotations. They support code pushdown on HANA and are the foundation for Fiori apps.
  8. What is the difference between a class and an interface in ABAP?
    A class defines attributes and methods and can be instantiated. An interface defines method signatures that classes implement, enabling polymorphism.
  9. What is a transport request?
    A container for changes that moves objects such as programs and tables from the development system to quality and production systems.
  10. What is RAP and ABAP Cloud?
    RAP, the RESTful Application Programming model, is the recommended way to build transactional apps in S/4HANA. ABAP Cloud is the upgrade-safe development approach that supports a clean core.
