SAP CO (Controlling) is the SAP module for internal cost and profitability reporting. It shows managers where money is spent and which products, markets and departments earn it back.
SAP Controlling is the management accounting side of SAP. While Financial Accounting records transactions for external reporting, Controlling organises the same costs by department, activity, order, project and product so that managers can plan budgets, compare plan with actual, and understand profitability.
CO is normally learned together with FI as SAP FICO, but it can also be studied on its own by people who already understand finance, such as cost accountants and financial analysts.

It is possible, but not recommended. CO receives its data from FI postings, so understanding FI makes CO much easier to follow.
A cost centre collects costs for a department. A profit centre measures the results, both revenue and cost, of a business unit or product line.
It is most natural for finance people, but business analysts and engineers who work with costing can also learn it.
No. It is a functional module, so the work is configuration, process design and reporting.
The concepts are the same, but the data is integrated with FI in the Universal Journal, and profitability analysis is account-based by default.
